This is not an in-utero photograph of a fetus
mariyam | 8:32 AM | impressive | photographyAt least not a photograph in the conventional sense of an image recorded using light. This is, to my understanding, a colorized three-dimensional ultrasound image.
The light is computer-generated "virtual illumination" which generates shadows and reflections just as available light would.
The purpose apparently is not just to satisfy the curiosity of expectant parents, but to improve diagnostic imaging of fetal abnormalities that might require medical intervention.
