The "national costume" of Canada

mariyam | 7:44 AM | | | Be the first to comment!

I'll defer from commenting on the Miss Universe competition per se, but couldn't resist posting this photo of Miss Canada wearing her "national costume."

As a former manager of a collegiate hockey team, I was startled by the 20-14 "score" until I read that it is a representation of the year (the scoreboard is attached to her outfit, btw).

If you have nothing better to do, here is a full gallery of all the "national costumes."

Did a Darwin Award applicant pass through the propellor arc of this aircraft ??

This [very] amateur footage of a serious Runway Incursion on a rural airstrip in Alaska shows our Fairchild C119 FlyingBoxcar taking off on a runway that is too short and too soft on a ferry flight. The plane had forced-landed there years ago to begin with...So this was the first takeoff after the plane had sat there for more than 13 years being vandalized etc. We had changed out one engine, windows and ball bearings and worked on it straight for over half a year. We have been given 7 videos of this takeoff by the locals and the FAA used the footage to teach about the feared "runway incursions". We have it on tape how our pilot preaches from the cockpit window to the assembled villagers that he will use every inch of available runway and THEN SOME beyond that, nevertheless we had a father and son standing in the way of the plane plus two others while a village schoolteacher and professional pilot was arguing with them about getting off the runway...Quite amazing, as said we have 7 camerapositions...Nobody died but the son did actually go through the Prop arc and had the luck to pass through the blades with no harm to him. R3350's run 2950 RPM on takeoff and the reduction gear reduces Prop RPM and at 94 knots it was some space between the 4 blades of the Prop. "
This video link was sent to me by my brother-in-law, who is an air traffic controller.  In the YouTube comment thread the OP responds to a question as to whether someone actually did "go through" the propellors:
From the 6 camera-positions & videotapes, as well as the still photos, That is what we have concluded, there is no other possibility. The 7th tape, being from the camera that the Kid held while he went through the prop-arc, I have never seen. Many people that saw it told me about it, there was no doubt !
I did some rough calculations this morning.  The plane's velocity at the end of the runway was reported at 94 knots = 108 mph = 158 fps.  The "reduction gear" ratio for the propellors is not defined; let's say the RPM were reduced from 2950 to 2400 (anyone know/guess?)  It's a 4-blade propellor, so 2400 RPM results in 9600 blade-passes per minute, or one blade coming by every 1/9600 minute.  Divide by 60 = 160 passes per second.

160 passes per second in a plane moving forward 158 fps would give a space of about 1 foot for the head to pass through.    The person who pulled this stunt probably had a small head to begin with.

A standard, unquestioned rule of airport safety is that nobody should walk through the propellor arc - even if the engine is turned off.
If you never walk through a stationary prop arc due to a conscious decision to avoid it, when you hurry across the flight deck it is less likely that you will walk through a turning prop arc.  FACT: People who have been killed by prop arcs were familiar with the aircraft and flight deck around them, but a momentary lapse of concentration caused them to stray into a turning propeller.
I suppose there is one possible lesson to be learned here.  If one finds oneself in a real-life action-movie scenario with a propellor blade coming toward you, and if there is no way to stop it and no way to avoid it and a physical encounter is unavoidable, then one's chances are statistically improved by rushing toward the spinning blades as fast as possible.

American schoolchildren advised to arm themselves. With cans of soup.

mariyam | 9:04 AM | | Be the first to comment!

This is not from the Onion; it's reported this week in The Telegraph:
Children in the US have been told to bring cans of soup to school to use as a weapon in the event of a school shooting.

The strange request was made by a secondary school in Alabama, which said the cans could be used to "stun the intruder or even knock him out until the police arrive". Parents at the WF Burns Middle School received a letter saying the school was "arming our students with a canned food item" in response to "school shootings throughout the United States".

"We realise at first this may seem odd, however, it is a practice that would catch an intruder off-guard. The canned food item could stun the intruder or even knock him out until police arrive," read the letter [embedded at right].
"The canned good item will give the students a sense of empowerment to protect themselves and will make them feel secure in case an intruder enters their classroom."
The letter explains that this procedure was developed based on research done on the internet (links provided).

The broader context is that this is part of an A. L. I. C. E. program (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) designed to teach students what to do in the event of an invasion by a shooter.  Similar programs have noted that soup cans are not de rigueur: staplers, shoes, books, binders, lab beakers, chairs and music stands are all acceptable projectiles.

The canned soup advice has been mocked by Vice on the left -
"When setting up an edible arsenal, one must first compare the relative densities of various canned foods. Eight tall ounces of pineapple juice is fine for a teacher to handle, but eight ounces of heavy corn syrup is the perfect size for preteen fists and packs equal wallop"
and by Townhall on the right -
It’s preposterous. Why not arm and train faculty and staff? Or bring in armed guards as the NRA advocated long ago?
Of course, if it's being mocked by the left and the right... perhaps the canned soup is the best middle ground.  Hmmm....

We should note before closing that the canned soup is to be stored at the school in locked cabinets to prevent, you know...

My wife noticed the above eBay listing yesterday.  An eBay seller offering the recent issue of Charlie Hebdo for 2,000 Euros.  Further searching revealed this one:

This morning I checked eBay to find actual sales - not just offers - and found...

That one actually sold for over $400.  So I pulled a complete listing of "sold" items ranked from highest price.  At the top was...

$20,000, with 117 bids from a variety of bidders.

Some of this may be fakery, with false bids from fake accounts.  When I rank the "sold" items by lowest price+shipping, I see quite a few being sold for $1 or so.

Just follow the directions on the signs

mariyam | 8:17 AM | Be the first to comment!
For a brief time Thursday and Friday the parking regulation signs outside Linwood E. Howe Elementary School topped 15 feet.

The signs were meant to clarify a new drop-off and pick-up procedure for when classes resume at the school, but as CBS2’s Juan Fernandez reported, neighbors just found them confusing.

Mayor Meghan Sahli-Wells said the plan was for the signs to only be displayed temporarily. “They just didn’t look temporary,” she said. “So they were going to be taken down. And it looked like … whoa. It was pretty impressive.”

"A poetic remake of the strategic achievement of Hannibal"

Gimme a break.  Dragging a replica elephant on wheels along the Cavalla Pass in Italy is hardly a remake of Hannibal's achievement.

A young man in Florida is accused of murdering his roommate (details at The Telegraph).  Evidence at his trial will include information retrieved from his PDA (screencap above).
The Siri device, which had been accessed via Facebook, allegedly responded with the question: "What kind of place are you looking for? Swamps. Reservoirs. Metal foundries. Dumps."..

Detectives who accessed Bravo's phone found that he had used the flashlight facility for 48 minutes on the day of Aguilar's disappearance.

The giraffe licked her and then kicked her in the face

mariyam | 9:00 AM | Be the first to comment!
This week at the Madison zoo, a woman from California was kicked in the face by a giraffe.
Amanda Hall, 24, of San Luis Obispo, climbed over one fence and was almost over the second fence encircling the giraffe enclosure when Wally, a 2-year-old, 12-foot-tall giraffe, licked her before turning and kicking her in the face, according to a Madison Police Department report...

She suffered injuries that were not life-threatening from the kick. Zoo staff told police Hall was lucky to not have been more seriously injured, as giraffes are capable of killing lions...

Hall was cited for harassment of zoo animals, which includes a $686 fine.

Stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid

A tourist seeking to take pictures of Yellowstone National Park crashed a camera-equipped drone into its largest hot spring, possibly damaging the prized geothermal feature, a park official said on Wednesday...

It was not clear if the drone that crashed Grand Prismatic Spring on Saturday and sank into its depths would damage the geothermal feature, park spokesman Al Nash said, and officials were still trying to decide whether to remove it.
More at The Raw Story, including this interesting tidbit:
Fishing Cone Geyser on the edge of Yellowstone Lake was a popular catch-and-cook site for anglers.  “People would... catch a fish and then drop that fish into the thermal feature where it would cook,” said Nash.

He added: “Once it was determined there was arsenic in the geyser water, that practice stopped."

Meet Vesper, Crave’s sleek stainless steel vibrator that also doubles as a classy pendant, without appearing as if a person has a dildo dangling from her neck...

Vesper will be USB rechargeable, but the new toy will be significantly more affordable than its predecessor. While a higher-end Crave Duet can cost upward of $349, Vesper is already available for pre-order from $49 online.
